Discover the untold stories about Empress Orchid—a pioneer of China reform, a loving mother, a charismatic lover, and a vibrant woman all in one.

A book reaching into the depths of some of China’s hidden history, Empress Orchid is a story about Tzu Hsi, China’s longest ruling woman and the last Empress. For many years, Chinese children were taught that Empress Orchid was "a mastermind of pure evil and intrigue." But author Anchee Min reveals a side of Empress Orchid buried long ago—a strong, passionate woman whose dreams fueled her desire to live more than a low-ranking concubine’s life.

Told in meticulous detail from elegant robes to heart-wrenching hardships, the book allows readers to conjure up vivid images as if reliving in China’s historical period with the Empress Orchid herself. With detailed accounts of the Forbidden City’s hierarchy and established traditions where "women are like grass, born to be stepped on", Empress Orchid is the heroine in the midst of male-domination and corrupt political officials.

As the history of the Forbidden City is unveiled, it becomes obvious that Orchid’s efforts to save China and will to survive as a woman deeply contrasts with her time period. Thus, it may not be entirely ludicrous to consider the fact that her infamous biography was recorded when a powerful woman was seen as a threat to man, which was likely to have been automatically perceived as wickedness and treachery.

Delve into a book that challenges a dark historical tradition by celebrating a real life woman’s dreams, endeavors, and accomplishments. Backed by research that Min secretly obtained from the Forbidden City, the book will walk you into a world that once existed, but that is ever slowly becoming just the past.

Discussion Questions:

  1. What are some of the things you would have done differently if you were Empress Orchid herself? Keep in mind the historical time period in which she lived.
  2. 1. In what ways have you seen equality for women get better?
  3. How much more did you learn about Chinese culture? Co you know other cultures that have shared similar histories and traditions as China?
